Strong Ties with Trump Highlighted
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Budapest to deliver a clear message of support from former President Donald Trump to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Speaking at a press conference following the Munich Security Conference, Rubio emphasized the personal connection between Orbán and Trump, saying it has been key to strengthening bilateral relations. He pointed to Hungary’s recent one-year exemption from U.S. sanctions on Russian oil imports as a tangible benefit of that relationship, adding, “It’s because we want you to continue. We want this economy to prosper; we want this country to do well.”
Rubio also visited Slovakia, meeting with Prime Minister Robert Fico. Both Fico and Orbán are known supporters of Trump and critics of the European Union. In Budapest, the Hungarian and U.S. foreign ministers signed an energy cooperation deal, calling the partnership a “golden age” in bilateral relations.
Election Challenges and Allegations
Orbán faces a tough battle in Hungary’s April elections, with the opposition Tisza Party leading in polls over his ruling Fidesz. During the press conference, Orbán accused Ukraine of interfering in the campaign, claiming Kyiv supports Tisza to advance Ukraine’s EU accession, while Hungary blocks progress on negotiations.
Despite concerns, Orbán assured the public that he would respect election outcomes. Citing his 20 years as prime minister and 16 years as opposition leader, he stressed that power would transfer according to the will of Hungarian voters.
Trump Visit and U.S.–Hungary Relations
Orbán reiterated that Trump has an open invitation to visit Hungary before the elections, though no date has been confirmed. He suggested the uncertainty could increase the likelihood of a visit.
Rubio did not meet with Tisza Party representatives, but the opposition welcomed his visit, noting that strong U.S.–Hungary relations remain a priority regardless of which party wins.
