Israel Hits Iranian Defence Systems

The Israeli military says it carried out a major strike on defence systems in western Iran, following joint US-Israeli air operations on Saturday morning. The attacks mark a serious escalation after weeks of heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran Retaliates Across the Gulf

In response, Iran launched strikes on American military installations throughout the Gulf, sparing only Oman. US President Donald Trump framed the attacks as addressing long-standing grievances dating back to the 1979 founding of the Islamic Republic, urging Iranians to eventually rise against their government.

International Concerns and Travel Disruptions

Global leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, called for restraint as the UN Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting. Meanwhile, several countries closed airspace, forcing flight cancellations and diverting planes bound for destinations like Tel Aviv and Dubai back to their points of origin.
