The White House launched a media “Hall of Shame” amid Trump’s intensified campaign against what he calls fake news. Officials said the portal, fully sortable and regularly updated, prevents hoaxes, anonymously sourced stories, or partisan smears from disappearing.
Portal Highlights Major News Outlets
The portal named The Washington Post “Offender of the Week” and targeted The New York Times, CNN, CBS News, and The Independent. It listed claims against specific reporters and publications, categorizing them under circular reporting, failure to report, false claim, malpractice, mischaracterisation, misrepresentation, bias, omission of context, lie, and left-wing lunacy. Matt Murray, executive editor of The Post, condemned the site as intentional targeting of journalists and vowed the newspaper would continue rigorous reporting.
Experts Warn of Threats to Press Freedom
Conservative watchdog Media Research Centre praised the portal, arguing Republicans must identify media outlets they consider hostile. Experts speaking to DW warned the site endangers journalists and threatens press freedom and democracy. The website appeared as Trump escalated attacks on journalists, often women, calling them “ugly inside and out,” “stupid,” and “piggy.”
