Luxembourg to Begin Initial Trial Runs
Automaker Stellantis has formed a partnership with Chinese self-driving technology company Pony.ai to co-develop electric vans capable of high-level autonomous operation for European use. The collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, will kick off with a series of pilot programs in Luxembourg, with broader expansion expected to start in 2026. The alliance is designed to blend Stellantis’ electric vehicle expertise with Pony.ai’s advanced autonomous driving systems.
Commercial EVs Equipped with Level 4 Automation
As part of the project, Pony.ai’s autonomous driving suite—featuring lidar, radar, cameras, and intelligent control software—will be integrated into Stellantis’ lineup of light commercial EVs, including models from Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel. The new vans will serve dual purposes, handling both urban passenger transport and delivery operations. Early testing will include professional safety operators overseeing the system as it undergoes validation and certification under European regulatory frameworks.
Strategic Move Expands Pony.ai’s Global Footprint
The partnership represents Pony.ai’s first major expansion into Europe, adding to its autonomous vehicle networks in China and the United States. For Stellantis, the collaboration marks another step toward embedding advanced automation into its growing range of electric vehicles. Both companies have committed to ensuring compliance with European safety protocols, data protection requirements, and cybersecurity standards before the technology transitions into commercial service.
