Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, cuts 600 jobs in its AI division, according to U.S. media. The company confirms the layoffs while continuing to hire staff for its superintelligence lab. Axios reports that these cuts will impact Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) unit, as well as its product-focused AI and AI infrastructure teams.

FAIR and AI Teams Affected

Meta’s newer TBD Lab remains untouched. Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, in a memo cited by Axios, urges affected workers to apply for other internal roles. Most displaced employees are expected to secure new positions within the company. Wang states that reducing team size will streamline decision-making and expand individual impact.

Meta Pursues New AI Strategy

The California-based firm continues hiring for TBD Lab, which develops its latest large language models (LLMs). These models power technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s own Llama. Unlike many competitors, Meta releases Llama as a semi-open source system, allowing users to adapt and modify its components. Meta claims over one billion people use its AI products monthly, yet analysts view the company as trailing OpenAI and Google in driving consumer adoption of LLMs.
